The exchange is with the Theresianum- a co-ed school based in a former summer palace (18th century) belonging to Marie Therese of Austria, very close to the heart of the beautiful city of Vienna.
Aim of the Exchange
This is a language exchange with the aim of giving current German students extra German lessons with native speakers. All participants will have the opportunity to practise spoken German, an opportunity to take part in school life in Vienna and to experience Austrian culture, food and family life as well as an opportunity to see the Austrian countryside and have fun! During their stay in Vienna the Irish students will stay in their partners’ homes and the Austrian students will come to Ireland for two weeks around St. Patrick’s Day and stay with their Irish counterparts for approx. 7-10 days.
During the first week the boys attend special German lessons and regular lessons in the school in the morning and in the afternoon they visit some of the wonderful sights of Vienna – the Schönbrunn palace, Stephansdom, the Belvedere art gallery, the Opera House, the Ringstrasse, the Military Museum, and the Prater etc.
During the second week they travel to the Kaprun area (Kitzsteinhorn glacier) in the west of Austria for three days of skiing. Two members of staff will accompany the group for both weeks.
What is included in the price?
Return air fare, comprehensive insurance, private group German lessons, lunch in the school, all transport for the two weeks – underground, tram, bus and train; all afternoon activities / visits in the first week; and the skiing trip in the second week – train to / from Kaprun, hotel accommodation with all meals, ski equipment, ski lessons, and ski passes. We also have to cover the cost of substitution for the teachers involved as the Dept. of Education and Science no longer pays for this. This exchange has taken place since the mid 1990’s and has always been a great success.
